John E. Fitzgerald Very Special Reserve Bourbon. Image courtesy Heaven Hill. This 20-year-old wheated Bourbon has a long history. It was distilled at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville in 1992, and Heaven Hill acquired the barrels when it bought the Old Fitzgerald brand in 1999. The barrels were moved to Bardstown and emptied into a tank in 2013 to keep them from becoming too oaky before they could be bottled. Finally, the whiskey was released in 2015 with a recommended price of $300 per bottle.

The nose has notes of cocoa, espresso beans, vanilla, a soft oakiness, muted spices, and honey. The taste is smooth and velvety with mild spicy notes of black pepper, cocoa, honey, dark chocolate, and vanilla. The finish is long with touches of caramel cola and vanilla, then turns slightly dry with a hint of dark chocolate. Very nice. (October, 2015)
