The Balvenie Peated Triple Cask. Image courtesy The Balvenie/William Grant & Sons. This is the travel retail cousin to the Balvenie Peat Week 2002 single malt. The difference is that this one was matured in a combination of first-fill and refill ex-Bourbon casks and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks, while the Peat Week 2002 was matured exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks. The nose is heathery and subtle with a light smokiness, honey, banana, and hints of vanilla and dried fruits. The taste starts off light at first, then develops a smoky touch on top of sweeter honey and dried fruit notes. The smoke lasts through the long, gentle finish with a reminder of a campfire on the morning after. (October, 2017)
