Glencairn’s Whisky Glasses Shatter Expectations (Episode 648: July 2, 2017)

When Raymond Davidson and his sons started marketing the Glencairn Whisky Glass in 2001, they thought the target audience was whisky blenders and industry professionals, and never imagined much consumer demand. Last year, Glencairn Crystal sold more than three million of its iconic and often-copied whisky glasses worldwide – up 22 percent from the previous year. Scott Davidson is Glencairn Crystal’s managing director now, and joins us on this week’s WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Bacardi is entering the Irish Whiskey market with a deal to acquire a minority stake and U.S. distribution rights for Teeling Whiskey. Sweden’s Box Distillery is planning a major expansion, and a few bottles of the final cask of Black Bowmore 1964 are now available in the U.S. We’ll also welcome another new Brand Partner to WhiskyCast and announce the winner of our latest giveaway, too!

A great interview with Scott Davidson from the Glencairn glass company. I love this iconic product and would love to see a whisky water jug in the same style as a gift set. (Does that exist?) I have been collecting Glencairn glasses for years. Every distillery in Scotland I go to I buy two as a memento of the visit as well as to use in my whisky tasting evenings.

I recently visited the Milk And Honey distillery in Tel Aviv and had a very enjoyable tour there. As well as buying a bottle of their Cask #033 “Young Single Malt” – Spirit drink, I noticed they were also selling genuine Glencairn glasses with the M and H emblem on them. I bought two at NIS 30 each, That’s about 6 Pounds sterling.

By the way, tasting notes on the Cask #033.
    12 months old.
There is a very dominant fresh white wine Gewürztraminer fruitiness up front. Behind this is creamy banana and vanilla, milky toffee popcorn with a touch of coconut essence and Rose water. There is a faint hint of sweet aniseed balls in the background with just a hint of honey.

It;s quite amazing for 12 months in a First Fill Ex-Bourbon cask but then again, the heat inside the distillery was hot and very humid. The angels must be getting a very generous share from this Israeli distillery.

Thanks for the note, Reb…will have to see about getting the folks from Milk & Honey on the show soon. Don’t forget to share a photo of your Glencairns with us this week on either Twitter, Instagram, or our Facebook page…we’ll pick one at random at the end of the week and send the winner a WhiskyCast Glencairn glass!
